[FAQ] Could you tell me whether the international driver’s license can be used directly in Toronto? My friend got his international driving license in Malaysia at the beginning, but now he is in the UK, and he is used to driving on the left all the time. I would like to ask if he can rent a car smoothly in Toronto with such an international driver’s license. Thank you.

  1. If it is a normal international driving license, it can be used in either the left-hand driving countries or right-hand driving countries. But be sure to identify genuine international driving permits. According to the United Nations road traffic convention, the International Driving Permit should be a tri-fold card with a white/gray cover, with the same size as a passport. Mainland China has never acceded to the United Nations road traffic convention and does not recognize international driving permits. But Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are excluded.

  2. When I first came to Canada in 1998, I used the Chinese driver’s license to rent a car. But I don’t know whether I can rent a car now.

  3. Thank you very much. I’ll go back to consult the rental company.
